Small Steps Towards Big Goals: Identity, Motivation and Resilience

How do we imagine our future? What goals do we want to achieve, and how can we turn our dreams into practical steps?

These questions were at the heart of a group workshop with unaccompanied refugee children, organised by the Council of Refugee Women in Bulgaria (CRWB) at the Safe Zone in Ovcha Kupel, Sofia, as part of the SAVE – Speak Out Against Violence project.

Through interactive games and discussions, participants shared their dreams and aspirations, including family reunification, education, learning a new language, and sports. Children explored how larger goals can be broken down into small, achievable steps and how to stay motivated despite challenges.

Setting personal goals is particularly important for unaccompanied refugee children, who often face uncertainty and difficulties in planning for the future. Such activities help them recognise their strengths, build confidence and perseverance, and develop skills to overcome challenges.

Every small step towards a personal goal is a step towards a more independent and secure future.

The need has faces, but no nationality. The manner of donation is as important as the act itself. Solidarity only makes sense when emotions are combined with reason and trust is not broken, but preserved and stimulated.
