Submitted by Dessi on Wed, 08/25/2021 - 15:26 In the first half of 2021 alone, according to the State Agency for Refugees, there are almost 1,000 people who have been granted humanitarian or refugee status. The main countries of origin are Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq. If last year's data is taken into account, the number of applications is expected to increase in the coming months. Refugees and asylum seekers face a number of challenges on arrival, related to the lack of economic realization, difficult access to health services due to the language barrier, social isolation. All this leads to an increased need for the services of cultural mediators and social workers, with knowledge at the same time about the cultural specifics of the beneficiaries, as well as about the Bulgarian social, educational and health system. The social services provided by our team are part of a number of activities under the project "Comprehensive integration support for legally residing third-country nationals", which we implement together with the team of Caritas Sofia, and includes activities to improve access to social and health services, education, employment and social integration.
